The Pain and the Pleasure
Two sides of the same coin
Heaven and hell are here now. Someone somewhere is experiencing tremendous pain and suffering. Through war, trafficking, domestic violence or any other of the ways humanity tortures itself. Hell personified. Likewise, babies are being born. First-time parents are holding a miracle in their arms. People are getting back on their feet after perhaps many struggles and challenges. The idea that a single mom, perhaps living out of her car, with her children, finally gets a place of her own. She walks into her new place and closes the door. She has a safe haven for herself and her children perhaps for the first time in a long time. Flavors of heaven.
What have you felt? What is the range of emotions you have felt for perhaps the last three months? Have you felt heaven? Have you felt hell? Or is it pretty much somewhere in the middle? Or perhaps something not mentioned here?
Last Sunday I took a hike in the mountains of Colorado. After having lived a slice of hell with the pain I experienced during my recent hospital stay, I spent time just sitting and taking in the mountains with a cool breeze blowing across my skin. That, for me, was pure heaven. The crisp clean mountain air was a delight to breathe. And the sound of the trees as the wind blew through their branches was superb. I know I wouldn’t have felt the same way had I not had the difficult hospital experiences. The contrast between the hospital and the mountains brought an extra vivid experience to me.
I feel like so many things are a slice of heaven. At least, since I got out of the hospital. Heartfelt music is exquisite. Tree blossoms fluttering to the ground as a breeze tugs them from their branches. Happy birds singing outside my window in the morning. The innocence of a child playing for playing sake.
My appreciation for these things was certainly heightened by having just spent 7+ weeks in a hospital bed. In a hospital room that had no breeze. No fresh air. No sounds of the wind blowing through the trees. Often no views of the sky or the city.
Similarly, risks and rewards can be two sides of the same coin. If you are not willing to take the risks, you will most certainly not reap the rewards.
With the notion that us humans are creatures of habit, we can get stuck in a mundane type of day-to-day living. Where there are not frequent experiences outside of the “normal.” The normal choices and thoughts we have day to day.
Stir it up a bit. Don’t be afraid of your shadow or painful memories of your past. To heal them opens up new opportunities for your future. Take the opportunities to enjoy yourself in whatever fashion you may choose, and however that may look. Perhaps a road trip to a favorite place you love. It will give your mind a chance to relax and daydream. Perhaps of what heaven might look like for you.
Love You
