Les is back … well, almost

I have had a life-changing experience

It is like I fell into an active volcano, got burnt down to just ashes, and have finally climbed my way back out.

Your life can change in an instant.

It started one quite normal morning. I was eating breakfast, in a hurry, and just shoved a huge bite into my mouth. What I didn’t know was that an extremely rare event took place in that moment. That huge bite completely shut down my digestive tract in an instant. Like metaphorically taping my mouth shut. No food in at all. If I tried to eat anything, even a tiny pain pill, it would be instantly expelled from my mouth. I had created a complete  blockage by having my ability to take in nutrients completely shut down. This is something I had never heard of before. In an instant, my ability to digest food stopped completely.

I thought it was food poisoning, thinking it would resolve itself in a day or two. Three and a half days later, I was completely drained of energy. I had not taken in any nutritional energy at all. At home alone at the time I was starting to shake and tremble. Having drained all my energy, I was running on fumes. Had I passed out then, I would probably be dead now.

I called a medical friend who told me that food poisoning has diarrhea associated with it. And that since I didn’t have that, that it was something else. I told them I felt totally exhausted and only had maybe a half hour before I would energetically crash hard. I was told to go to intensive care. I drove myself to the hospital. They started me on a sugar water IV. After evaluating me, they created a complete nutritional package they could deliver through an IV. They started that and I started to regain some of my energy. They put me on a program that had a complete restriction of any food or water for 72 hours. Nothing allowed orally. This was done to try to see if the body could get itself started again. In other words, it would be better if the body rebounded by itself, avoiding the need for surgery.

That wasn’t successful. So they planned laparoscopic surgery to go inside with a camera to see what the problem was. During the surgery they could not discern the problem, and they decided to just cut me open with a full abdominal surgery. After that first surgery, there was a complication. My heart rate was too high. And my abdomen wasn’t right either. Within like 24 hours I was in a second full abdominal surgery. They drained 4+ liters of fluid from my abdomen. The pain levels I felt between the first two surgeries was some of the most intense I have ever felt. Like I was being burned down to ashes. After the second surgery they found a significant leakage and I was sent back for a third surgery. All within a few days. Most of the rest of my 52 days in the hospital involved a few more procedures, and lots of recovery time. Just wanted to put out an overall summary.

Do you see the flowers? Do you feel the breeze? Are you present in your life now?

Obviously, my blogs, podcasts and such were all put on hold. Although I am back home, I have yet to recover from spending so many days confined to a hospital bed. It can be quite a challenge to readjust to “normal” life.

Love You

Les
